Apple Announces iPhone 3G

June 11, 2008

Apple recently announced it’s new iPhone 3G which is thinner, is much faster (no longer EDGE), has more features, and is a lot cheaper than the first version almost a year ago. The new iPhone is to be available on July 11th and plans to launch in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and the 16GB for $299 in black or white.

Should you buy the new one and ditch the old one? Well, for starters, one of the biggest complaints using a mobile phone is its lack of speed when browsing the web. With the new iPhone, you get 3G browsing speed, which is much faster than the slower EDGE connectivity, and makes the page load is up to 2.8 times faster.

The most attractive part is the price, obviously. Apple figured since 50 percent of people surveyed didn’t buy an iPhone before due to its big price tag ($599 and $699), they dropped the price this time and the 8GB iPhone is one-third the price that the 4GB iPhone sold for at launch last year. The 16GB iPhone will sell for $299. These new prices will hopefully reach out to more consumers than ever before, according to Apple.

More details coming soon.

Google Announces GPhone…Not

November 06, 2007

On Monday, November 5th, Eric Schmidt announced about its new open-source platform Android,, and not the product — the GPhone — like a lot of people anticipated at the conference at the time.

Google will be unveil Android’s user interface sometime next week to the public. However, a number of reports got to see a phone prototype using Android, and this is what Quentin Hardy of Forbes had to say about it:

“It is thin, about 3 inches wide and 5 inches long, and features a touch-sensitive, rectangular screen. Unlike the iPhone, the screen is also time-sensitive: Hold down your finger longer, and the area you’re controlling expands. The bottom end of the handset, near the navigational controls, is slightly beveled so it nestles in the palm. The screen also swivels to one side, revealing a full keyboard beneath. (The screen display changes from a vertical portrait mode to a horizontal display when someone uses the keyboard.)”

In addition, Android is a very flexible platforum and will be compatible phones with small and large screens, QWERTY or non QWERTY, and will be generally less expensive than typical smartphones, such as the BlackBerry and iPhone. This means that manufacturers will be able to offer smartphones for less than $200.

More information about the new Android platform next time.

iPhone’s Keyboard Worse Than QWERTY

August 22, 2007

A study done by consulting firm, User Centric, has found that iPhone’s keyboard is less efficient than using physical QWERTY keypads.

The research included 20 phone owners who frequently used their phones to text message. Half of them had iPhones while the other half had gadgets with physical QWERTY keypads.

Interesting enough, those using iPhones were slower and had a hard time finishing the tasks. Some of the particular issues noted by the researchers are:

Participants expressed a great deal of frustration with the sensitivity of the iPhone touch keypad. Participants made an average of 11 errors per message on the iPhone compared to an average of 3 errors per text message on their own phone. Although the error rate was alleviated somewhat by the iPhone’s self-correction feature, participants were still frustrated. In particular, participants struggled when they were trying to type using the Q & W keys or the O & P keys on the iPhone.

IPhone Flaw Lets Hackers Take Over

July 23, 2007

A team of computer security consultants recently said that they have found a flaw in Apple’s popular and hyped iPhone. Apparently, hackers can take control of the device through a WiFi connection or by tricking users into going to a website that contains malicious code. Any information stored in the iPhone can be stolen.

Lynn Fox, a spokesperson for Apple, said, “Apple takes security very seriously and has a great track record of addressing potential vulnerabilities before they can affect users.”

“We’re looking into the report submitted by I.S.E. and always welcome feedback on how to improve our security,” she said.

Former employee of the National Security Agency who has a doctorate in computer science, a Dr. Miller, showed to a reporter how the hack was done. Using the iPhone, Mr. Miller visited a website that he designed, and the site injected a bit of code into the iPhone that then took over the phone. “We can get any file we want,” he said.

Popularity can be a very good thing or a bad thing. In this case, the iPhone is the target of a wide audience, not to mention hackers as well. The iPhone is becoming a victim of its own success.

RIM officially announces Wi-Fi-enabled BlackBerry 8820

July 18, 2007

After getting the green light from the FCC just a couple of weeks ago, Research in Motion today officially took the wraps off the RIM BlackBerry 8820, the company’s first smart phone with integrated Wi-Fi.

Available through AT&T Wireless later this summer, the 8820 supports 802.11a/b/g standards and is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols, including WEP and WPA. In addition, the BlackBerry 8820 is the company’s thinnest full QWERTY device to date (beat it, BlackBerry Curve), and has built-in GPS for out-of-the-box support for location-based services such as TeleNav GPS Navigator.

Other highlights of this quad-band phone include EDGE support (no 3G, though–boo hiss!) Bluetooth 2.0, and an expansion slot that accepts both microSD and microSDHC memory cards.

Those are just some quick hits. We’re still trying to nail down some more details, such as pricing and exact release date, but wanted to share the good news with you in the meantime. Check back soon for updates.
